The Committed To Kids Pediatric Weight Management Program is an individualized approach to weight management conducted in an outpatient, group setting. The clinic staff includes a physician, registered dietitian, exercise physiologist and behavior specialist. Participants receive a comprehensive body measurement (height, weight, calculation of overweight and body fat analysis), exercise and nutritional evaluation and therapy throughout the program to monitor their progress. Our exercise program, called MPEP (Moderate Intensity Progressive Exercise program), is designed specifically for overweight children and includes strength, flexibility, and aerobic training presented in user-friendly videos and educational materials. MPEP emphasizes methods for increasing daily activity and for improving body-movement exercise techniques. Because the needs of overweight children vary with their ranges of obesity, we have structured the individual nutritional and exercise prescription in four phases: |

Each exercise phase is accompanied by 10-week exercise prescription and record-keeping cards; and an exercise video appropriate to the participant’s phase. As body fat decreases and exercise tolerance increases, participants are advanced to the next appropriate phase, using the color-coded exercise prescription cards, videos and appropriate dietary modifications. The exercise specialist conducts exercise and educational sessions at the weekly clinic meetings to reinforce activity guidelines. |

In addition, children and families attend weekly, group meetings, that provide a variety of educational sessions and behavioral discussions conducted by the staff's registered dietitian and behavioral specialist. Colorful and fun activity workbooks contain self-monitoring and positive behavioral practice tools. Each workbook contains 10 record-keeping and activity sessions to achieve short-term goals and maintain motivation. Participants complete a set of four workbooks (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert) to gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve long-term maintenance. There are also achievement certificates, a student/parent handbook, and other materials to motivate and empower the participant. |
The program staff is composed of a team of medical and health professionals whose main concern if the child’s safety and success in the program. Physicians, registered dietitians, child development specialists and exercise physiologists receive professional curriculum and training seminars to ensure that each participant enrolled in the program reaches his or her goal of physical and emotional well-being. |
